Active throughout the battle of Normandy and before, the Ninth Air force were a key part of air operations. The Ninth attacked tactical targets such as roads, railways, and sites for Hitlers terror weapons. Many targets were assigned on a daily basis such as supply depots and airfields, Many crews flying two sorties a day, with the engineers having to turn aircraft around at break neck speed for the next mission.

Aircraft such as this P-47 Thunderbolt supported the troops on the ground and carried out Armed Reconnaissance missions attacking moving targets beyond the front line. Both the P-38 and P-47 were also used by the Ninth Air Force.

The Ninths contribution cannot be over estimated.
